Thought + Experience = Wisdom

Diversity of Thought + Diversity of Experience = Powerful Wisdom

One of the greatest things in coaching is the different mindsets and philosophies of coaches.  Whether the coach is younger or older each is unique in their coaching philosophies.  The thoughts (mindset) and the number of years in the sport of coaching (experience) provide a gift to other coaches.  The gift is WISDOM.

Some of my best learning moments are getting around other coaches and listen to their different ways of coaching the physical and mental game.  It provides us coaches with added knowledge, different perspectives, and the result is becoming a better coach.

Develop a growth mindset and listen to the different coaching styles (diversity) and enjoy the different eras and cultures these instructors have coached (experience).  All of this provides us coaches with POWERFUL WISDOM as we head out to coach our next player.

Look for Diversity and Win the Day!

Gratitude Practice

Be Thankful

Gratitude practice has the ability to rewire your brain, which can improve your physical and mental well-being.

What does this mean for your athletic performance?

Beyond the benefits to your outlook, immune system, and sleep schedule, studies have documented the positive impact that gratitude can have on an athlete’s performance.

A method to practice gratitude is to spend 10 minutes a day meditating, but instead of clearing your mind, focus on holding a positive thought or something you’re grateful for in the front of your mind. Examine how it makes you feel, how it improves your life, and what forces you have to thank for it.

It might feel silly at first, but over time, cultivating a practice of gratitude will improve not only your physical and mental well-being but your athletic performance as well.

Invest In Your Time

Return On Your Investment

Investing Your Time and Not Spending Your Time are complete opposites.  If you spend money, that amount of money is gone.  If you invest money, that money will get a return on that investment.

Many people/athletes are like mice on a wheel.  They keep running in circles and never get anywhere.  The lack of investing your time wisely will not get you where you want to be one day.

Moving from spending to investing your time will provide you with the presence necessary to perform your best today, the next day, the next day.......

Pep Talk

Give Yourself A Pep Talk

Telling yourself that "I can do it, I will get it done, all I need to do is get started" is often all it takes to get yourself moving to get the job done.

Start talking to yourself about finishing the project and start thinking about how good it will feel when you are done - you will get more excited about starting... and closer to finishing.

You may want to have a working music mix that you play to help you get energized for work or have certain motivational messages posted in your workspace that will help get you going.  Here are a couple of messages that may keep you on track...

Learn - Unlearn - Relearn

Learn - Unlearn - Relearn

The great coaches and players of this generation are the ones who can Learn, Unlearn and Relearn.  I reflect back on the many evolutions that I have seen in bowling the past several decades.  From technology (bowling balls, lanes and maintenance, coaching tools), biomechanics (how the body works and training techniques), knowledge (evolution of coaches), etc that created a mindset to Unlearn certain beliefs and Relearn new ones.

A great example in our sport is the two-handers.  This new type of athlete has created an opportunity for coaches to Unlearn and Relearn how to effectively coach this type of player.  Also, the two-handers are evolving which again starts the cycle all over (Learn - Unlearn - Relearn).

What a great opportunity to develop a growth mindset to improve and add tools to your game and/or coaching methods.

Today start to Learn - Unlearn - Relearn and Win Your Day!

The Preciousness of Time

Time - The Sacred Gift

Our most sacred gift is time.  On our self-discovery journey, we can get so consumed with yesterday and worried about tomorrow that we undervalue the power of today.  Nothing in life is guaranteed - literally nothing.  Use each day as a blank page to love, to serve, to learn, to unlearn, to relearn, to create, to let go, to read, to write, to inspire, to heal, and to forgive.

Every day, you have a unique opportunity to tell your story and be the very best version of yourself.

Know Your Integrity

Integrity

Write down something you believe is the right thing to do, but you don't act on it because you feel like it will not change anything.

List the roadblocks you are imposing to stop yourself from doing what is right.

What would your life look like if you did the right thing in every situation whether it changed anything or not?

Do the right thing and Win the Day!

Enjoy the Journey

The Journey

Do you find yourself on an emotional roller coaster due to results that are out of your control?

If YES, how can you let go of your fixation on the results and focus on your responsibility to put your best effort into the task on which you're working?

If NO, how have you seen your life benefit from concentrating on your accountability rather than results?

Enjoy your Journey and Win the Day!

Systems & Routines

Consistent Performance

To be consistent over time, you must be able to describe what you do as a process or a system.  A system is a set of actions that you repeat on a consistent basis to get the results you want.  You may refer to your process and your system as your routine.

The most successful coaches, business professionals, and bowlers I have been around have routines embedded in their lives.  They have routines for when they wake up in the morning, for when they to bed at night and throughout their day.  They have systems and routines for how they leave a voicemail, for how they handle their emails daily, for how they execute social media and routines for how they practice and perform in competition.

Experts are saying that we will have the systems and routines that we are developing right now through this pandemic for many years to come once we get back into our normal lives.  Start developing systems and routines that will evolve your future bowling and/or professional career.

What is one area in your life where more routine would give you more consistent performance?

The 80/20 Rule

80/20

How to 80/20 your work:

(1) Make a list of the 10 things you spend the most time on.

(2) Circle the two that truly drive your results. Do more of those.

(3) Look at the others. Eliminate ruthlessly. Automate or outsource what you can. Press pause on the rest.

(4) Repeat.
